CORRECT, COMPLETE, COMPELLING

People are smart and don't want their news dumbed down.

Good news tells the entire story without taking any side.

Creating stories that are Correct, Complete, and Compelling is a function of asking certain questions about the story. In addition to the basic Four W’s, journalists must ask “How will our coverage rise above ever-competing noise?”

When editing and sequencing a story, my compass is “How would I want to hear and learn this story?” Placing myself in the viewer’s chair requires me to narrow the salient facts to what truly defines the story – why the story matters to a viewer.

The challenge is making coverage stand out. In any news market, at least three other news organizations will be chronicling the same events. How will our presentation of the facts rise above the noise?

My gold standard is simple but not easy – every story must be clear and conversational – pristinely elucidated yet unaffected in style. And every story must inform the viewer the story’s importance to them personally and individually.
